Rome is a lovely city we felt very safe. We were warned about pickpockets but never felt at risk however do not let your guard down they are out and about.
We were suprised how clean the city was, I had read about the city been disgusting but we did not see much litter ect and Easter is a very busy time of year.
I had worried our 8 year old would not enjoy the trip but he insisted on coming. He actually loved the city and having just studied Roman history at school I think it came alive for him.
The simulator ride I think on Via Compo? was very good at giving you an insight into Rome and I would recommend it cost 11 euro each. All the maps will have this marked on where it is.
